As we missed the ‘3 days of design’ festival in Copenhagen in June, we decided to combine a trip with a family holiday over the summer break. It was our first time in Copenhagen and we have completely fallen in love with it! All of it, the people, the food, the lifestyle, their style, the architecture, everything!
A few places that we loved, if you are heading there any time soon:
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art - the building, its interior, the art and sculptures, the opportunity to go for a swim in the clear blue sea at the end of the gardens!
Ordrupgaard + Finn Juhl house - a museum set in scenic, peaceful surroundings. Nestled in the grounds is Finn Juhl’s house, one of the finest examples of modernism, it’s perfectly preserved.
Bellevue Beach - the beach is stunning in itself but then add in Danish designer and architect Arne Jacobsen. He can be seen almost everywhere, from the geometric kiosks, theatre and housing to lamps and the iconic striped lifeguard towers.
Operaparken - a green oasis located at the Copenhagen harbour front next to the Royal Opera house.
Other places we LOVED:
Prolog coffee
Isoteket ice cream
Anderson & Maillard - go for the square filled croissants
Reffen - perfect on a sunny summer evening with delicious food, sunsets and music
We also visited some incredible showrooms, see below for more!
Normann Copenhagen
We managed to pick the perfect quiet time to visit Normann Copenhagen meaning we had the privilege of exploring an almost empty showroom which made the experience even more special. Their ’Elements of Normann’ exhibition that they showcased at 3 days of design was still in place and it was a treat for the senses. The striking brutalist building, a 1936 former printing house in the heart of town with its geometric concrete ceilings contrasting with the textures, shapes and colour of their furniture and lights. The exhibition is a celebration of Normann Copenhagens 25 years history with the addition of some more recent introductions. Our favourite pieces was the recently launched mat chair.
Audo copenhagen
We stayed in the primarily residential area of Østerbro next to the newly transformed Nordhavn. Nordhavn is among Northern Europe's largest and most ambitious urban development projects regarding sustainability and has become a hot spot for modern architecture and urban planning solutions. We stayed nearby at Charlottehaven.
Audo House is a unique concept that unites a cafe, a restaurant, a showroom for all things Audo, and a place to stay. Behind its enticing terracotta facade is a warm, calm, cosy interior showcasing Audo's beautifully made furniture and lighting. Standout pieces for us were the Eave sofa in a gorgeous green and the penguin chairs.
HAY house
We visited the impressive HAY house, located in the centre of Copenhagen, which has been recently refreshed ready for Autumn. The historic architecture of the building gives a a stunning backdrop to HAY’s modern furniture and accessories. It’s a place to see the HAY brand come to life. We especially loved the new Quilton lift sofa and daybed and the Rey collection of chairs and tables.\
&Tradition
We were lucky enough to be in Copenhagen when &tradition were having an open house to celebrate the introduction of some of Robin Day’s designs into their portfolio and launch some new designs. The &tradition showroom is a restored 18th century townhouse. Its stunning architectural with all of its original features providing a beautiful setting for floor after floor of &tradition furniture and lighting. My favourite was the top floor, the ‘Apartment’ that showcases how &traditions designs and designers can be mixed to create a perfectly harmonious stylish home.
Finn juhl
After visiting Finn Juhl’s house in Charlottelund, north of Copenhagen, and being blown away by it, we went straight to the House of Finn Juhl for some more inspiration. The showroom is set in a building dating back to 1879 which used to be a famous Music publisher. Its a perfect space to show off and celebrate Finn Juhls designs. We particularly loved the new Kettelhut chair and to see so many of the outstanding, quality designs in one place.
Vitra
A 10 minute walk along the Harbour from our base in Østerbro is Vitra’s waterfront showroom located at the Free Port of Copenhagen. It’s an unmissable opportunity to look at the Vitra classics with beautiful views over the water and to have a seat on the newly launched Anagram sofa. Designers Panter and Tourron say ‘Its not just a comfortable sofa it’s a highly flexible lounge system that can be easily adapted tot he changing preferences of its users in seconds’ We saw first hand how easily the modules and elements can be rearranged quickly with minimal fuss. Anagram sofa will be coming to our website very soon…
