About House of Finn Juhl

Finn Juhl was an incredibly skilled Danish designer from the 20th century, a true master of sculptural furniture design. He passed away in 1989 but his designs live on today and talented designers work to recreate and reintroduce both classic designs and designs that never went into production. Their collection takes its starting point both in the original drawings as well as the older original pieces from his house, private collections or museums.

The House of Finn Juhl brand is part of Onecollection which was founded in 1990 by Ivan Hansen and Henrik Sørensen, who run the company and passionately provide high quality design solutions in cooperation with the best designers. In 2001, Onecollection was trusted with the exclusive rights to re-launch Finn Juhl's sculptural and iconic furniture by Finn Juhl’s widow. Today the unique Finn Juhl collection consists of more than 50 classic masterpieces, all of which the House of Finn Juhl manufacture with the utmost respect for the original heritage and strict demands for quality.

Finn Juhl the designer

Finn Juhl approached furniture design like a sculptor, prioritising organic forms and artistic expression over traditional construction methods. In the 1940s and '50s, he broke away from both heavy traditional styles and the rigid norms of functionalism. Unlike many modernists who favoured minimalist lines, Juhl embraced fluid shapes, refined details, and a sense of movement in his work. He is most famous today for his iconic furniture designs including the Chieftain chair and the 108 chair.

pelican chair

Like a Body Holding a Body

Finn Juhl typically named his furniture after the year it was designed, but over time, the chair became popularly known as the Pelican. Although it was immediately recognised for its unique character, it would take 61 years before the design entered production in 2001. With its soft, organic curves, the Pelican Chair gives the impression of one body cradling another offering a comforting, almost embracing feel when seated. Like many of Juhl’s later creations, it’s designed to support multiple relaxed sitting positions, combining sculptural form with ergonomic comfort. It is manufactured with a cushion and is upholstered by hand in Denmark in textile, sheepskin or leather. The legs are available in oak, walnut or black painted.

chieftain chair - a danish icon

The Chieftain Chair is seen as Finn Juhl’s most iconic work and a landmark of Danish Modern design. Introduced in 1949, its bold, sculptural form drew inspiration from tribal art and primitive weaponry, marking a departure from traditional Danish furniture and strict functionalism. With its organic shapes and grand scale, the chair symbolises a turning point in postwar design. Handcrafted in Denmark with premium leather and available in oak or walnut, the chair remains a statement piece, requiring space to fully express its presence. Despite its impact, Juhl modestly recalled sketching it in a single day, simply wanting to create something larger and more expressive than the smaller chairs of the time.
