The design classic by Alvar Aalto

The original Artek Stool 60 by Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto was introduced in 1933 and has become one of the most recognisable pieces of Scandinavian furniture design.

Simple, practical and beautifully considered, Stool 60 was designed as a universal piece of furniture that could be used in many different ways. Its round seat and three distinctive L-shaped legs give it a remarkably simple appearance, while its construction makes it strong, versatile and easy to use.

Almost a century after it was first introduced, Stool 60 remains in continuous production and is as relevant today as it was when Aalto designed it.

At Cimmermann, we offer the authentic Artek Stool 60 in a range of finishes. Whether you're looking for a simple stool, an occasional table or a versatile piece of furniture that can be used throughout the home, we're always happy to help you choose the right finish. We have a couple of these in our own house as stool and as tables in different finishes and we love them!

The story behind Stool 60

Alvar Aalto introduced Stool 60 in 1933 as part of his pioneering work with bentwood furniture.

Aalto was interested in creating furniture that was simple, functional and accessible, while also exploring new ways of working with natural materials. Stool 60 became an important example of this approach.

Its distinctive L-leg was particularly significant. Rather than treating the leg simply as a support for the seat, Aalto developed a construction that combined the leg and the joint in a single piece of bent birch.

The result was a simple, strong and highly practical design that could be manufactured efficiently and transported easily. The design is made from just a few carefully considered components, Stool 60 can also be stacked, making it particularly useful when several stools are needed but space is limited.

Stool 60 went on to become one of Aalto's best-known pieces and remains one of the foundations of Artek's collection.

Stool 60 reflects Alvar Aalto's interest in combining natural materials with innovative manufacturing techniques.

The legs are made from Finnish birch and use Aalto's distinctive L-leg construction. The wood is bent and formed to create the characteristic shape, giving the stool both its strength and its recognisable appearance.

The natural birch also means that each stool has its own subtle variations in grain and tone. Over time, the material develops a natural patina, making the stool a piece that changes beautifully with use.

Its ability to be flat-packed also makes Stool 60 particularly efficient to transport, reducing the amount of space required during shipping.

One of the pleasures of Stool 60 is its simplicity, which allows different finishes to change the character of the piece.
