Who Were Charles & Ray Eames?

Charles Eames was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1907 and studied architecture at Washington University before developing a successful career in design. His work attracted the attention of architect Eliel Saarinen, leading to a fellowship at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, where he later became head of the industrial design department.

Ray Eames, born Bernice Alexandra Kaiser in Sacramento, California, in 1912, studied painting and was an active participant in the American Abstract Artists movement. She later enrolled at Cranbrook Academy, where she met Charles.

The couple married on 20 June 1941 and soon relocated to Los Angeles. There they established what would become the renowned Eames Office, a creative studio that explored furniture, architecture, photography, film, graphic design and exhibition design.

During World War II, Charles and Ray developed moulded plywood leg splints and other products for the US Navy. The knowledge gained through these experiments laid the foundations for some of the most important furniture designs of the twentieth century.

Their influence extended far beyond furniture. Together they created a multidisciplinary body of work that celebrated innovation, craftsmanship and human-centred design. Charles Eames died in 1978, and Ray Eames passed away exactly ten years later in 1988.

the design philosophy of charles & ray eames

eames collection la fonda base

Charles and Ray Eames believed that good design should solve problems while bringing joy to everyday life. Their work was guided by a deep curiosity about materials, technology and human behaviour.

Rather than designing for style alone, they focused on how people actually live and use objects. They continuously explored new manufacturing techniques, from moulded plywood to fibreglass and aluminium, seeking ways to create furniture that was both comfortable and efficient to produce.

The Eameses viewed design as a process of discovery. Their famous belief that "The details are not the details. They make the product" reflects their commitment to craftsmanship and thoughtful problem-solving.

For Charles and Ray, design was never limited to furniture. It was a way of understanding the world and improving everyday experiences through innovation, functionality and beauty.
