It has been one of our great privileges, as design enthusiasts and owners of a business dedicated to providing well-made furniture that lasts, to be part of people’s own home stories.
The mission we embarked on in 2004, when we decided to combine our shared love of great design with our belief that our homes, our planet, and our lives deserved better than the fast-furniture trend that was evolving rapidly.
In a fast-paced noisy world we’re both looking for something slower so we wanted to consider what a slower approach to our homes means to us.
the slower home
A few years ago, after considering how our homes impacted our well-being during those COVID-19 times, and interested in the impact of more time spent at home, and especially more homeworking and more multi-generational living, we created a series called ‘The Happier Home” to outline the ways our homes make us feel happier. We found:
Well-being is found through creating a home container that shapes our dreams, expresses who we are authentically, and that works for all the people living there, as well as being considerate of the impact on our planet.
Three years on, we’re facing an even more urgent challenge of repairing and protecting our planet, as well as increased global turmoil and a somewhat uncertain future.
slow not fast
As the impact of “fast” unveils itself in ugly piles of unwanted plastic and rubbish around the world, in fashion, in furniture, in all the things that we consume, less has to be more.
Many of us are familiar with the Slow Food Movement, which originated in Italy in the 1980s. Carlo Petrini and a group of activists formed Slow Food to oppose the opening of a McDonald’s in the Piazza di Spagna in Rome. The slow food movement celebrates local food traditions, protects edible biodiversity and advocates for fair, clean and regenerative food production.
Slow furniture is the same. Our response to the throwaway culture; we advocate for sustainable and ethical manufacturing processes. We believe in timeless, seasonless and adaptable pieces that can be moved and reconfigured and repaired and refurbished to extend the lifespan and adapt with us.
Slow is the feeling of space and time when you sit in a favourite chair and watch the way the light falls in a certain spot.
Slow is appreciating good design and taking the time to understand the story behind every piece and the materials it's made of.
Slow is buying pieces that tell a bit of your story, whether they’re second, third hand or new.
Slow is pieces that are made for life, and to be passed down, not landfill.
Slow is the rituals you make time for, over and over again.
design for all
Many modern designers strived to make good design affordable to everyone like Nils Strinning for String, HAY, the Eames’ for Vitra. It’s important to note that our interpretation of the word “affordable” has been massively impacted by fast fashion. Affordable should mean buy once, something to invest in once, but keep for your whole life, not buy ten times and discard.
To us, slow means really well-made furniture for your whole life.
No seasons, no trends, extremely high quality and durable.
