who are the designers?
Ronan Bouroullec & Erwan BouroullecBorn in France in the 1970s, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec studied respectively at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the École des Beaux-Arts in Cergy-Pontoise before establishing their Paris-based studio in the late 1990s. Internationally recognised for their thoughtful, poetic approach to design, the brothers have created an extensive body of work spanning furniture, lighting, textiles, tableware, spatial systems and urban projects. Their designs feature in major museum collections and publications worldwide, reflecting a practice that balances technical precision with softness and human sensitivity. They have built long-standing collaborations with leading European brands including HAY in Denmark and Vitra in Switzerland, producing innovative pieces that combine functionality with a distinctive visual language. The original Palissade Collection is one of HAY’s most recognisable outdoor furniture series, known for its clean linear design and durable steel construction that integrates seamlessly into both natural and urban settings.
Crafted from powder-coated or hot-dip galvanised steel, each piece is engineered for strength, longevity and visual lightness. The symmetrical geometry allows rainwater to drain easily while creating a consistent visual language across the range.

Building on the signature design of the original Palissade, Palissade Cord introduces handwoven recycled polyester cord, adding a softer, more relaxed feel while preserving its elegant silhouette and timeless appeal.
The Palissade Cord collection brings a softer expression to Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s iconic outdoor range. Retaining the same graphic design language, recycled polyester cord is handwoven onto a powder-coated steel frame, giving the series warmth and tactility without compromising durability.

Care & Maintenance
Palissade is designed for outdoor durability, but proper care will ensure it remains looking its best.
General care: Clean regularly with warm water and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive cleaners or tools that may damage the surface finish.
Rinse thoroughly to remove salt or pollutants in coastal or urban environments.
Powder-coated steel: Touch up any chips promptly to prevent corrosion. Store indoors or under cover during extreme winter conditions where possible.
Galvanised steel: Requires minimal maintenance. Natural weathering may occur over time, which does not affect performance.
Cord (Palissade Cord): Clean gently with water and a soft brush. Allow to dry fully before covering or storing. For long-term protection, we recommend breathable outdoor covers when not in use for extended periods.

Palissade FAQS
What is the difference between powder-coated and hot-dip galvanised Palissade?
Powder-coated Palissade features a coloured outdoor coating applied over a protective primer, offering a refined matte finish and strong weather resistance. Hot-dip galvanised Palissade has a raw zinc coating that provides maximum corrosion resistance, making it especially suitable for coastal or highly exposed environments. The galvanised finish has a more industrial, natural silver-grey appearance.
Which finish is best for coastal areas?
For properties near the sea or in high-salt environments, we generally recommend the hot-dip galvanised version, as it offers the highest level of protection against corrosion.
Will the colour fade over time?
Palissade is designed for outdoor use and is UV-resistant. As with all outdoor furniture, gradual weathering may occur over many years depending on exposure, but the finish is engineered to retain its colour and integrity for the long term.
Is the Palissade collection stackable?
Yes, several models including the dining chairs are stackable, making them practical for winter storage or commercial settings.
Are cushions available?
Yes, specially designed seat cushions are available for selected Palissade dining and lounge models. These are made in durable, outdoor-friendly fabrics and are designed to fit the geometry of the collection perfectly.
Does water collect on the seats?
No. The linear steel design allows rainwater to drain easily through the gaps, helping the furniture dry quickly after rainfall.
How heavy is Palissade furniture?
Palissade is solid and robust, designed to remain stable outdoors even in breezy conditions. While not lightweight, most pieces can be moved by two people with ease when needed.
Is the Palissade Cord suitable for full outdoor exposure?
Yes. The HAY Palissade Cord range uses handwoven, UV-resistant 100% recycled polyester cord over a powder-coated steel frame. It is specifically designed for outdoor use, though we recommend covering or storing during prolonged harsh weather to extend its lifespan.
Does the cord stretch or sag over time?
The recycled polyester cord is tensioned and engineered for durability. Minimal relaxation may occur with long-term use, but it is designed to retain its structure and comfort.
Is Palissade comfortable without cushions?
Yes. The angled seating position and subtle flexibility of the steel (particularly in the cantilever version) provide ergonomic comfort. However, cushions can enhance comfort for extended lounging.
Can Palissade be left outside all winter?
Yes, it can remain outdoors year-round. That said, using breathable covers or storing pieces under shelter during extreme winter conditions will help preserve the finish and reduce maintenance.
