the making of the eames lounge chair

Designed By

Charles & Ray Eames are one of modern design's most recognisable partnerships. Born in the early part of the 20th Century Charles and Ray Eames married in 1941 and moved to Los Angeles, where together they began experimenting with techniques for the three-dimensional moulding of plywood. The aim was to create comfortable chairs that were affordable.

Playful and fun, the Eames' had a great energy that lives through their iconic products today. "Take your pleasure seriously" was a favourite saying of Charles Eames.

Officially licensed production is carried out by Vitra for Europe and the Middle East, and Herman Miller for North America, making them the only manufacturers recognised by the Eames Office.

One of the most iconic and influential furniture creations of the 20th century, this chair seamlessly combines ergonomic comfort, innovative design, and enduring elegance. It is showcased in prestigious museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The Vitra Eames Lounge Chair is available in two sizes to accommodate different preferences and body types. The Classic version follows the original 1956 dimensions, preserving the proportions of the iconic design. The XL version offers a more generous fit, with additional seat height, width and backrest space for enhanced comfort.

For those over 185 cm tall or who prefer a roomier seating experience, the XL is worth considering. The Classic remains an excellent choice for most users, retaining the original design's familiar proportions. Explore our Vitra Eames Lounge Chair Classic vs XL guide for a closer look at the differences.

Each Eames Lounge Chair is expertly constructed using moulded plywood shells finished in genuine wood veneers, including walnut, Santos palisander, cherry and chestnut. These are complemented by luxurious leather or fabric upholstery and a durable die-cast aluminium base.
