Originally designed in 1929 for the Tugendhat House in Brno, Czech Republic, the Tugendhat chair with arms is a modernist classic by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
First named Federsessel or “spring chair”, the design quickly became known by the villa it was created for, thanks to widespread attention the house received. Blending the comfort of a lounge chair with the innovation of a cantilevered tubular steel frame, the Tugendhat was Mies’ attempt to marry elegance with engineering. Though introduced around the same time as the now-iconic Barcelona Chair, the Tugendhat was Mies' personal favourite, a quieter triumph that reflected his pursuit of refined comfort. Launched in a time of global economic downturn, the chair’s high production cost limited its commercial success. Nearly a century later, it has returned to the spotlight. The Tugendhat Armchair features a sleek, untufted upholstered seat, armrests, and a distinctive leather strap back for enhanced support. It’s available in a curated selection of upholstery options - a masterwork of material, form, and restraint. There is also a version without arms.
Materials:Frame - steel structure and arms, chrome finished or epoxy paint onyx ultra matte with black plastic glides. Seat and back in flexible polyurethane at varied density, with polyester wadding. Upholstered in many different fabrics or leathers. The cushion suspension straps and ties are made of leather. For fabric covered cushions the colour of the straps and ties must be selected from the four colours available. For leather covered cushions the colour of the straps and ties will be the same as the seats.

Along with Alvar Aalto, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius and Frank Lloyd Wright, he is regarded as one of the pioneers of Modernist Architecture & Design. His Barcelona chair is one of modern design's true classics, often imitated but never bettered.
