The Knoll Bertoia Plastic Stool brings Harry Bertoia’s sculptural approach to furniture into a versatile seating design.
Known for exploring the relationship between form, material and space, Bertoia created a collection of wire furniture that remains distinctive for its open construction and expressive geometry. The stool pairs a moulded plastic seat with a sculptural welded-steel rod base, creating a contrast between the smooth seat shell and the intricate metal structure beneath. Its compact, architectural form makes it a practical choice for informal dining, kitchen islands or occasional seating, while the open base helps maintain a sense of space around it.
Available in a selection of seat and frame finishes, the Bertoia Plastic Stool can be tailored to suit different interiors. It offers a contemporary interpretation of the designer’s celebrated work with steel, combining everyday function with a recognisable mid-century design language.

Harry Bertoia was a complete and gifted artist. He started life as a metal worker who was ahead of his time and crossed boundaries daily. His famous designs for Knoll are truly unique and his original trade of metal worker can clearly be seen. Knoll historian Brian Lutz once said “Bertoia’s paintings were better than his sculptures. And his sculptures were better than his furniture. And his furniture was absolutely brilliant."
