The House of Finn Juhl Pelican Armchair in Sheepskin is a sculptural icon of Danish modern design, combining an expressive organic silhouette with luxurious, tactile upholstery.
Designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Finn Juhl in 1940, the Pelican Chair challenges conventional furniture forms with its embracing curves, distinctive proportions and inviting comfort.
Originally presented at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition in 1940, the Pelican Chair reflects Finn Juhl’s fascination with modern sculpture and the relationship between the human body and furniture. Its curved backrest and generously upholstered seat create a distinctive, enveloping shape, while the bold wooden legs provide a striking contrast to the softness of the chair’s form. This version is upholstered in off-white Skandilock sheepskin, bringing natural texture, warmth and softness to the chair’s sculptural design. The pale upholstery highlights its flowing curves, while the solid wooden legs create a considered balance between organic form and refined craftsmanship. Choose between oiled walnut or dark-oiled oak legs to complement your interior.
Beyond its distinctive appearance, the Pelican Armchair is designed for relaxed sitting. Its generous proportions, loose cushion and embracing shape make it an inviting lounge chair for a living room, reading nook or bedroom. The combination of soft sheepskin and carefully finished timber makes it equally suited to contemporary interiors, understated Scandinavian spaces and more eclectic design schemes.
Although the Pelican Chair attracted attention when it was first unveiled in 1940, it did not enter production until 2001. Today, it is recognised as one of Finn Juhl’s most distinctive designs, celebrated for its sculptural character and enduring influence on mid-century Danish furniture.

Finn Juhl (1912-1989) was the first Danish furniture designer to be recognized internationally. He studied architecture at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen with Danish architect Vilhelm Lauritzen, but as a furniture designer he was self-taught, a fact he always emphasized.
Juhl began designing furniture in the late 1930s, in the beginning mostly pieces intended for himself, but after setting up his own office in 1945 he soon became known for his unusual, expressive and sculptural pieces.
One of Finn Juhl's most well-known pieces is the Chieftains Chair. Designed in 1949, it is a fine example of Juhl's great idea of separating the sculpturally shaped seat and back from the wooden frame.
