The HAY Wood Box Coffee Table by American designer Jonathan Muecke explores the relationship between furniture, architecture and functional sculpture.
Crafted entirely from solid oak, this distinctive occasional table is defined by its precise geometric form, carefully considered proportions and intriguing construction. Rather than relying on decorative detailing, its character emerges through the natural beauty of the material and the precision of its craftsmanship.
At first glance, the Wood Box appears to be a simple geometric volume, but closer inspection reveals an inventive arrangement of interlocking wooden sections and seamless joints. Its puzzle-like construction creates a distinctive visual rhythm, transforming a compact piece of furniture into an object of architectural interest. The thoughtful detailing demonstrates Muecke's approach to design, where structure, material and form become equally important. Measuring just 40cm square and 35cm high, the table is particularly well suited to contemporary interiors where considered proportions and versatility are valued. Its compact dimensions allow it to sit naturally alongside a sofa or lounge chair, work as an alternative to a traditional bedside table, or provide a sculptural accent within a living space.
Available in oiled oak and black lacquered oak, each finish offers a different interpretation of the design, from the warmth of natural timber to a more understated, contemporary appearance. Part of HAY's contemporary furniture collection, the Wood Box Coffee Table reflects a thoughtful approach to everyday objects, elevating a practical surface into something more expressive. Whether styled individually or arranged alongside additional pieces, it brings material character, architectural simplicity and distinctive designer appeal to modern homes.
