The HAY Rey Upholstered Dining Chair, designed by Swiss furniture designer Bruno Rey, introduces an added level of comfort to one of the most recognisable designs in modern furniture history.
Originally created in 1971, the Rey Chair has been reimagined through HAY's collaboration with Swiss manufacturer Dietiker, retaining its distinctive silhouette while introducing carefully selected upholstery and updated material combinations.
The chair is distinguished by its gently curved backrest, generously proportioned seat and softly rounded edges. Its seat and back are formed from moulded plywood with a beech top and outer veneer, supported by solid beech legs. The upholstered seat features a comfortable padded finish, available in a selection of premium Kvadrat fabrics, including Steelcut and Steelcut Trio, offering a choice of colours and textures to complement different interior schemes.
A defining characteristic of the Rey collection is its innovative screwless wood-to-metal connection, developed by Dietiker using cast aluminium brackets. This distinctive construction provides strength and durability while preserving the chair's clean, uninterrupted appearance. The upholstered version also retains the practical stackable design, allowing up to four chairs to be stacked when not in use. Bruno Rey was a Swiss born industrial engineer born in 1935 and is best known for his eponymous Rey Chair design. After years of travel at home and abroad as well as activities in architectural offices, he opened his own atelier in 1968. During this time, initial designs emerged for a new kind of wooden chair, which went into serial production in 1971 and the “Rey Chair” became the most successful Swiss chair of all time.
