Bring sculptural elegance to your interior with the Fritz Hansen Swan Chair in Leather, a celebrated design that combines fluid curves, refined materials and inviting comfort.
Designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958, this iconic lounge chair is distinguished by its organic silhouette and beautifully upholstered form, offering a sophisticated accent for contemporary homes, executive offices and carefully curated interiors.
Created for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, the Swan Chair represented a departure from the straight lines and angular forms that dominated much of mid-century furniture. Jacobsen explored a more fluid approach, shaping a chair that appears almost continuous in its curves, with no straight lines in its distinctive profile. The result is a design that feels both architectural and expressive. Its sculpted back flows seamlessly into the seat, while the gently curved sides provide a sense of enclosure without the imposing proportions of a traditional high-backed armchair. More than six decades after its introduction, the Swan remains a defining example of Danish modernism.
The Swan Chair is designed to offer a welcoming place to sit without sacrificing its distinctive appearance. Beneath the leather upholstery, a carefully shaped shell padded with cold-cured polyurethane foam provides a supportive, comfortable seat. Its compact proportions make it particularly versatile, fitting naturally beside a sofa, in a bedroom seating area or within a dedicated reading corner. A swivel base allows you to turn easily towards a conversation, a view or a nearby desk, adding practical flexibility to its sculptural design. The satin-chromed steel column and satin-polished aluminium star base provide a crisp architectural contrast to the upholstered shell. Discreet details, including the carefully finished base and supporting structure, reflect Fritz Hansen's commitment to considered design and craftsmanship.
The Fritz Hansen Swan Chair in Leather works beautifully as an individual statement piece or alongside other iconic Scandinavian furniture. Pair it with a contemporary side table and floor lamp for a relaxed reading space, or use it to introduce an organic counterpoint to a room defined by straight architectural lines. Its combination of distinctive form, premium upholstery and practical proportions makes it equally suitable for living rooms, bedrooms, studies and sophisticated commercial interiors.

The legendary Arne Jacobsen trained as an architect in Copenhagen. His most famous buildings include Arhus Town Hall in Denmark, the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen and St Catherine's College in Oxford England. His experiments into plywood resulted in the Ant chair in 1952.
The work on the SAS Royal Hotel resulted in some of his most outstanding designs, including the Egg and Swan chairs, a stainless steel cutlery set now made by silver manufacturer Georg Jensen and a series of lamps, manufactured by &Tradition and Louis Poulsen. A perfectionist and a master of detail, Jacobsen worked right up to his death in 1971. In central London, his Royal Danish Embassy on Sloane Street was completed only in 1977. He was one of Denmark's most influential 20th-century architects & designers.
