Bring warmth, sophistication and iconic Scandinavian design to your dining space with the Fritz Hansen Superellipse Table in Walnut.
Combining a distinctive elliptical tabletop with the rich appearance of walnut veneer, this celebrated dining table balances elegant proportions with practical functionality. Its sculptural shape and carefully considered details make it a timeless centrepiece for contemporary and classic interiors alike.
The story of the Superellipse Table began with a traffic problem in Stockholm. Danish mathematician, poet and designer Piet Hein developed a superelliptical solution for the roundabout at Sergels Torg, creating a shape that offered a harmonious balance between a circle and a rectangle. Recognising the potential of this distinctive geometry for furniture, Hein collaborated with Swedish designer Bruno Mathsson and Danish architect Arne Jacobsen to translate the concept into a dining table. Introduced into production by Fritz Hansen in 1968, the Superellipse has since become an enduring example of how mathematical precision can inspire beautiful, functional design. Its gently curved edges and elongated proportions give the table a distinctive appearance while creating a welcoming setting for dining, working and entertaining.
Beyond its distinctive appearance, the Superellipse Table has been carefully conceived to encourage comfortable, inclusive gatherings. Its elongated shape and smoothly curved edges create a natural flow around the tabletop, allowing the table to work beautifully in a variety of dining spaces. Unlike traditional rectangular tables, its rounded ends soften the overall silhouette and help create a more fluid arrangement of dining chairs. The design also avoids an obvious head-of-the-table position, making it particularly well suited to relaxed dinners, family meals and entertaining guests. Available in a range of sizes, the walnut Superellipse can accommodate different room layouts and seating requirements. From more compact dining areas to larger spaces designed for entertaining, the collection offers flexibility without compromising its recognisable design language.
Piet Hein was neither an architect nor a furniture designer - but a philosopher, poet and mathematician. He created the Superellipse as a new oval shape for the Sergel's Square in Stockholm. In cooperation with the Swedish designers, Bruno Mathsson and Arne Jacobsen, he later used the shape for the Super Ellipse Table Series which Fritz Hansen put in production in 1968.
