Bring balance and character to your dining space with the Fritz Hansen Superellipse B616 Table. With its distinctive geometric outline and carefully considered proportions, this 170cm dining table offers a sophisticated alternative to conventional rectangular designs. Created by Piet Hein in collaboration with Bruno Mathsson and Arne Jacobsen, it is a celebrated example of Scandinavian furniture that combines intelligent design with everyday practicality.
The Superellipse design has its roots in a traffic challenge in Stockholm. In the 1950s, mathematician and designer Piet Hein developed a solution for the busy Sergels Torg square: a superelliptical roundabout that would improve the flow of traffic while introducing a more harmonious shape to the urban landscape. The distinctive geometry caught the imagination of designers and eventually found its way into furniture. Working with Bruno Mathsson and Arne Jacobsen, Piet Hein adapted the form into a dining table that Fritz Hansen began producing in 1968. What started as an exercise in urban problem-solving became a design classic, demonstrating how mathematics and functionality can inspire objects of enduring beauty.
Measuring 170cm long, 100cm wide and 72cm high, the Superellipse B616 provides a generous surface for everyday meals, working from home and entertaining friends. Its proportions make it a versatile option for family dining rooms and open-plan kitchens, offering ample space without the footprint of a much larger dining table. The gently curved corners soften the elongated tabletop, while the symmetrical shape creates a natural setting for conversation. Unlike a conventional rectangular table, the Superellipse has a fluid, balanced appearance that works beautifully with a variety of dining chairs and interior styles.
The B616 combines a practical laminate tabletop with a distinctive aluminium edge, supported by Fritz Hansen's elegant steel span legs. Available in chromed or powder-coated finishes, the base adds a refined architectural detail while maintaining the table's clean, understated aesthetic. Its restrained design makes it easy to incorporate into both minimalist and more expressive interiors. Pair it with classic Fritz Hansen dining chairs for a cohesive Scandinavian look, or introduce contrasting upholstery, natural textures and warm materials for a more individual setting.

Piet Hein was neither an architect nor a furniture designer - but a philosopher, poet and mathematician. He created the Superellipse as a new oval shape for the Sergel's Square in Stockholm. In cooperation with the Swedish designers, Bruno Mathsson and Arne Jacobsen, he later used the shape for the Super Ellipse Table Series which Fritz Hansen put in production in 1968.
