Create an impressive setting for entertaining with the Fritz Hansen Superellipse B614 Table, a statement-making dining table that brings together innovative design, practical proportions and the understated elegance of Scandinavian furniture.
Designed by Piet Hein in collaboration with Bruno Mathsson and Arne Jacobsen, this 240cm table is an enduring example of how a simple geometric idea can transform everyday living.
The Superellipse began with an unexpected design challenge. In the 1950s, Piet Hein was asked to help resolve traffic congestion around Sergels Torg, a busy public square in Stockholm. His solution was a superelliptical roundabout, an ingenious shape that combined the efficiency of an oval with the balanced geometry of a rectangle. This innovative form subsequently found a new purpose in furniture design. Working with Bruno Mathsson and Arne Jacobsen, Piet Hein adapted the Superellipse into a dining table that Fritz Hansen introduced in 1968. Today, the design remains a celebrated example of the relationship between mathematics, architecture and functional beauty.
At 240cm long and 120cm wide, the Fritz Hansen Superellipse B614 offers generous room for family meals, dinner parties and special occasions. Its elongated tabletop accommodates up to ten people, making it an excellent choice for larger dining rooms and open-plan interiors where gathering around the table is central to everyday life. Unlike a conventional rectangular dining table, the Superellipse features gently curved edges and a distinctive oblong silhouette. These flowing contours soften the overall appearance, while the carefully balanced shape creates a welcoming arrangement for conversation. The design feels architectural without appearing imposing, making it equally suited to contemporary homes and more classic interiors.
The B614 combines a durable laminate tabletop with a distinctive aluminium edge and Fritz Hansen's elegant steel span legs. Available in chromed or powder-coated finishes, the base introduces a subtle contrast with the tabletop while maintaining the clean, understated character of the design. Its versatile aesthetic pairs naturally with a wide range of dining chairs, from iconic designs by Fritz Hansen to contemporary upholstered seating. Whether styled in a restrained monochromatic palette or contrasted with warm wood and textured fabrics, the Superellipse table provides a sophisticated foundation for a thoughtfully designed dining space.
The Fritz Hansen Superellipse B614 is a compelling choice for those who appreciate furniture with both a story and a purpose. Its origins in urban problem-solving give the design an unusual historical dimension, while its generous proportions and timeless form make it highly practical for modern living. Piet Hein was neither an architect nor a furniture designer - but a philosopher, poet and mathematician. He created the Superellipse as a new oval shape for the Sergel's Square in Stockholm. In cooperation with the Swedish designers, Bruno Mathsson and Arne Jacobsen, he later used the shape for the Super Ellipse Table Series which Fritz Hansen put in production in 1968.
