The PK80™ Daybed reflects Poul Kjærholm’s ability to work within tradition while quietly reshaping it.
Historical reference is not treated as constraint, but as material - refined, edited, and resolved into something more exact. Its lineage can be traced to a 1930 couch by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Yet what remains here is not imitation, but distillation.
A generous mattress upholstered in canvas creates a relaxed, inviting surface, while the painted plywood platform provides a clean, supportive foundation. Beneath it, the satin-brushed stainless steel frame introduces a precise linear structure that appears light against the substantial mattress. The contrast between the soft upholstered surface and the crisp metalwork is central to the PK80’s enduring appeal.
The structure is reduced to its essential elements, each component given clarity and purpose. There is a stillness to the piece. A sense of balance between surface and support, softness and precision. It is this restraint that allows the daybed to endure - present in spaces such as Museum of Modern Art in New York, and across contexts where craftsmanship and modern design are held in equal regard. There is also a PK80 Leather version available.
Poul Kjærholm’s design approach is evident in the careful balance between comfort and construction. Rather than relying on decorative details, the PK80 draws its presence from the relationship between the canvas upholstery, painted platform and finely finished steel frame. Its lineage reflects the modernist daybed tradition, refined into a distinctive expression of Danish design.
Materials: The PK80™ daybed consists of a large mattress covered with upholstery in canvas. The daybed rests on a painted plywood bed-plate and the cushion core is made of granulated foam and hairlok (animal hair/latex). The frame is made of satin brushed stainless steel.

Poul Kjærholm was a trained carpenter and continued his studies at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts. He had a particular interest in different construction materials; especially steel which he considered a natural material with the same artistic fineness as other natural materials. He was employed at Fritz Hansen for about a year, where he designed a number of note-worthy furniture pieces - "The Kjærholm Collection", developed from 1951 to 1967 these designs have an aura of exclusivity.
