A refined expression of modernist design, the Fritz Hansen MC340 Planner Square Coffee Table was designed by American designer Paul McCobb in 1953.
Defined by its clean geometry, considered proportions and honest use of materials, the Planner collection embodies a timeless design philosophy in which form follows function.
The MC340 is the largest square table in the Planner range, offering a generous 100 × 100 cm surface that makes it a natural centrepiece for contemporary living spaces. Its beautifully proportioned marble top sits above a slender black powder-coated steel frame, creating a striking contrast between the richness of natural stone and the precision of metal. Available in Charcoal or Cream marble, the tabletop brings its own distinctive character to the design. Charcoal marble features a deep, dark ground with contrasting white veining, while Cream marble introduces a warmer palette with subtle red veining and natural mineral details. Each slab has its own individual markings, ensuring that every table is unique. The carefully engineered steel base is formed from solid welded rods, with fine structural supports that maintain a sense of openness beneath the substantial tabletop.
This balance of visual weight and lightness gives the table an architectural quality without overwhelming its surroundings. With its generous proportions, the MC340 is ideal for larger seating arrangements, where it provides ample space for books, objects and everyday essentials. Its restrained silhouette works effortlessly alongside contemporary sofas, sculptural lounge chairs and a variety of interior styles, from minimalist spaces to more layered, material-led schemes.
Originally conceived in the 1950s and relaunched by Fritz Hansen, the Planner Coffee Table remains a compelling example of McCobb’s enduring approach to furniture design. Its combination of natural marble, precise construction and understated elegance makes it a lasting investment in thoughtful design.
Paul McCobb was born in 1917. He moved from Boston to New York to pursue his dream of becoming a designer. When it came to design he was completely self-taught but his profound understanding of perspective paved the way for his emerging career as one of the most important designers of the time. Perspective and scale in particular became a trademark for McCobb, whose tables, shelves and even lamps were the result of meticulous attention to the room the design would inhabit.
