The Grand Prix chair was first presented at the Designers' Spring Exhibition at the Danish Museum of Art & Design in Copenhagen in 1957. Later that year, it was exhibited at the Triennale in Milan, where it received the Grand Prix award that gave the chair its name. Its recognisable form reflects Jacobsen's ability to combine visual simplicity with functional design.

The curved seat shell and outward-angled legs create a distinctive silhouette that remains relevant in modern interiors. The seat is made from pressure-moulded sliced veneer and finished with a clear lacquer that allows the natural wood grain to remain visible.
