The Case Forum Armchair, designed by Robin Day in 1964, is an enduring example of British modernist furniture design. Celebrated for its exposed timber framework and distinctive finger-jointed construction, this iconic chair brings architectural character, exceptional craftsmanship and mid-century sophistication to contemporary interiors.
At the heart of the Forum design is its beautifully articulated hardwood frame, positioned on the outside of the upholstery rather than concealed beneath it. This deliberate approach celebrates the relationship between structure and form, allowing the natural grain of the timber and the precision of the joinery to become defining features. Chrome-plated steel legs extend from the sides of the frame, introducing a crisp metallic contrast to the warmth of the wood. The generously cushioned seat and back provide a comfortable place to relax, with Dacron-wrapped foam delivering softness while helping the cushions retain their shape.
Available with a solid oak or walnut frame and a choice of bouclé fabric or leather upholstery, the Forum Armchair can be tailored to suit a variety of interior schemes, from warm, natural living spaces to more dramatic contemporary settings. Measuring 93.5 cm wide, the chair has a substantial yet balanced presence, making it an excellent choice for living rooms, reading corners and sophisticated reception areas. Its sculptural timber outline creates visual interest from every angle, allowing it to function as both comfortable seating and a distinctive design statement.
Case Furniture worked closely with the Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation to bring this historic design back into production, studying original drawings and examples to preserve the proportions and character of the 1960s design. Modern refinements, including a metal-reinforced frame, enhance strength and longevity while respecting Robin Day's original vision. Whether positioned beside a contemporary sofa or used as a standalone accent, the Forum Armchair pairs effortlessly with natural materials, considered lighting and understated accessories. Combine it with the matching Forum Sofa for a cohesive living room arrangement that celebrates one of Britain's most recognisable furniture designs.
