Designed in 1959 by Ole Wanscher, the OW149 Colonial Chair is a celebrated example of Wanscher’s refined approach to Danish modern design.
Created to honour the elegance of classic furniture traditions while remaining timeless in its appeal, the Colonial Chair has become Wanscher’s most iconic and enduring piece. Defined by its slender proportions and graceful silhouette, the chair demonstrates Wanscher’s preference for lightness and restraint without compromising strength or comfort.
Carefully engineered bracing provides remarkable stability, while the softly curved armrests - rising gently before tapering downward - showcase one of Wanscher’s signature design details. Crafted with exceptional attention to proportion and materiality, the chair features round timber legs, with the rear legs curving subtly outward to enhance both stability and visual refinement. The result is a chair that feels delicate in appearance yet reassuringly robust in use.
Fifteen years after its introduction, Wanscher expanded the collection with the matching Colonial Sofa and Colonial Coffee Table, together forming the Colonial Series. For additional comfort, the OW149 Colonial Chair is also available with the coordinating OW149F footstool.

Ole Wanscher (1903-1985) was integral to the core aesthetic and functionality of modern Danish design. He studied under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and later worked at Klint’s design studio before becoming an independent furniture designer. He helped shape Danish furniture design as a designer and as an educator when he took over Klint’s professorship at the Academy.
