Egg chair

The Egg chair by Arne Jacobsen - a design classic

Few pieces of furniture are as instantly recognisable as the Egg chair. Designed by Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen in 1958, the Fritz Hansen Egg chair is one of the most celebrated designs in Scandinavian furniture history. Its distinctive sculptural shape, enveloping form and carefully considered proportions have made it an enduring design classic.

Originally created for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, the Egg chair was designed to offer a sense of privacy and comfort within a larger architectural space. More than six decades later, its distinctive silhouette remains as relevant as ever.

At Cimmermann, we offer the authentic Fritz Hansen Egg chair, with a choice of upholstery, leather and base finishes. Whether you're considering the Egg chair for a living room, reading space or a quiet corner at home, we're here to help you find the right combination.

The history of the Egg chair

The Egg chair was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 as part of his wider architectural and interior design project for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen.

Jacobsen was commissioned to create the hotel as a complete design, considering everything from the architecture and interiors to the furniture and smaller details. The Egg chair was an important part of this vision.

The hotel's architecture was characterised by strong geometric lines and a structured, modernist aesthetic. Against this backdrop, the Egg chair introduced something quite different. Its soft, organic curves created a welcoming contrast to the building's more angular forms.

Jacobsen wanted to create a space within a space: somewhere people could sit comfortably and enjoy a little privacy within the busy hotel environment.

What began as a design for the hotel lobby and reception areas went on to become one of the most recognisable lounge chairs in the world.

Today, the Egg chair remains part of the Fritz Hansen collection, retaining the distinctive shape that Jacobsen developed more than sixty years ago.

The design

Jacobsen experimented with wire and plaster in his garage to develop the shape of the chair. Like a sculptor, he worked to find the right proportions and curves, refining the form until he achieved the distinctive silhouette we recognise today.

The high back and curved sides give the chair its characteristic appearance, while the organic shape provides a contrast to the straight lines often found in modern interiors.

The Egg chair sits on a distinctive four-star swivel base, allowing it to turn and adapt to its surroundings. The tilt mechanism can be adjusted to suit the weight of the individual user, and the chair is available with an automatic return function.
