The &Tradition Little Petra Lounge Chair with Footstool is a wonderfully inviting piece of Danish design, created by Viggo Boesen in 1938. Small in scale but generous in comfort, its low, curved form creates a relaxed place to sit without taking over the room.
Little Petra quickly attracted attention when it was first shown at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibition, later receiving recognition at exhibitions in New York and Berlin.
Boesen was associated with the softer, more organic side of 1930s Danish ‘funkis’ design, and Little Petra is a particularly good expression of this approach. Its rounded silhouette and open form feel warm and welcoming rather than rigid or formal. Despite its compact proportions, the chair is designed for proper relaxation. The generous upholstery and supportive seat allow you to settle into a variety of comfortable positions, while the accompanying footstool gives you the option of stretching out and putting your feet up.
Oak or walnut legs add a natural finish that complements the soft upholstered form. Named after Boesen’s mother-in-law, Little Petra remains one of his most recognisable designs and an easy choice for living rooms, bedrooms, reading corners and other cosy spaces. Viggo Boesen is a relatively little known architect who contributed to Denmark’s signature design aesthetic in the 1930s. In particular, his work reflected Scandinavian ‘Funkis’ style, a Nordic take on Art Deco. In contrast to mass-produced materials and the less-is-more approach from the Bauhaus school of thought, Boesen brought a soft, warm and almost naive aspect to design, ushering in new forms of upholstered furniture. Only a few of his designs were ever produced, yet Boesen’s original ideas, organic shapes and expressive design lingo were precursors to Denmark’s subsequent stance on modernism in the decades that followed.
