The &Tradition Little Petra Lounge Chair by Viggo Boesen is a beautifully distinctive example of 1930s Danish design.
First shown at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibition in 1938, the chair was quickly recognised for its character and went on to receive awards in both New York and Berlin.
Little Petra reflects Boesen’s interpretation of the Danish ‘funkis style’, moving away from the strict minimalism of Bauhaus towards softer shapes, fuller proportions and a more organic expression. Its small scale is one of its most appealing qualities. Despite its generous, enveloping shape, Little Petra is surprisingly petite, making it easy to introduce into bedrooms, living rooms, reading corners and other intimate spaces.
Low and open in its form, the chair invites you to sit in a variety of relaxed positions. Its carefully considered seat and upholstery provide an exceptionally comfortable place to settle into, while the choice of oak or walnut legs adds a natural warmth that complements the soft upholstery. Viggo Boesen is a relatively little known architect who contributed to Denmark’s signature design aesthetic in the 1930s. In particular, his work reflected Scandinavian ‘Funkis’ style, a Nordic take on Art Deco. In contrast to mass-produced materials and the less-is-more approach from the Bauhaus school of thought, Boesen brought a soft, warm and almost naive aspect to design, ushering in new forms of upholstered furniture. Only a few of his designs were ever produced, yet Boesen’s original ideas, organic shapes and expressive design lingo were precursors to Denmark’s subsequent stance on modernism in the decades that followed.
