For architect and sculptor Jonathan Muecke, material comes first. In his first collaboration with Knoll, Muecke applies the same principles that guide his art practice — clarity through repetition, freedom through logic - to create a quietly expressive all-wood dining collection.
Choosing wood for its familiarity, warmth and grain, Muecke sees it as both common and elemental: “Plus, it has grain,” he says. “We can think of this as material.” Each piece was refined through an extensive series of hand-built prototypes, allowing Muecke to develop a distinct joinery system that is repeated across the collection. Repetition, for Muecke, is a stabilising force — a way to reach clarity through restraint. A note on his studio desk reads: Repetition allows an object to be found in as few decisions as possible. “It’s a preference for a certain type of object,” he explains, “one that isn’t a thousand decisions, but three.” The result is a collection that feels at once sculptural and familiar — furniture grounded in craftsmanship and logic, designed to bring quiet generosity to everyday spaces.
Materials: Frame in solid wood finished in natural white oak, ebonised ash or Oxford walnut. The seat and backrest panel are made from curved plywood, topped with sliced veneer in a wood finish similar to the frame.
