The House of Finn Juhl France Armchair in Fabric is a timeless example of Danish modern design, combining elegant proportions, exceptional craftsmanship and understated sophistication.
Designed by Finn Juhl in 1956 for the Danish furniture manufacturer France & Son, this iconic lounge chair was created with the American market in mind and remains a celebrated piece of mid-century Scandinavian furniture.
The France Armchair is distinguished by its refined wooden frame, gently sculpted armrests and upholstered seat and backrest, which appear subtly lifted from the supporting structure. This characteristic detail gives the chair a light, floating appearance while highlighting Finn Juhl’s innovative approach to furniture construction. The armrests feature his signature paper-knife detail, an elegant sculptural element that connects the France Chair to some of his most celebrated designs. This fabric-upholstered version pairs the chair’s clean architectural lines with the tactile appeal of premium textile.
Cimmermann offers this configuration with a black-painted oak frame and grey-and-white Kvadrat Fuse 131 fabric, creating a versatile combination that works beautifully in both contemporary and classic interiors. The contrast between the dark frame and textured upholstery emphasises the chair’s distinctive silhouette without overwhelming a space. Carefully crafted with attention to proportion, comfort and material quality, the France Armchair is an elegant addition to a living room, reading corner, home office or sophisticated hospitality setting. Its compact dimensions make it practical for a variety of interiors, while its authentic Danish design heritage gives it lasting appeal. Produced by House of Finn Juhl, the France Armchair celebrates the designer’s ability to combine functional furniture with artistic expression.

Finn Juhl (1912-1989) was the first Danish furniture designer to be recognized internationally. He studied architecture at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen with Danish architect Vilhelm Lauritzen, but as a furniture designer he was self-taught, a fact he always emphasized.
Juhl began designing furniture in the late 1930s, in the beginning mostly pieces intended for himself, but after setting up his own office in 1945 he soon became known for his unusual, expressive and sculptural pieces.
One of Finn Juhl's most well-known pieces is the Chieftains Chair. Designed in 1949, it is a fine example of Juhl's great idea of separating the sculpturally shaped seat and back from the wooden frame.
