The House of Finn Juhl 53 Lounge Chair is an iconic example of Danish modern furniture, combining expressive woodworking, elegant proportions and exceptional comfort.
Designed by Finn Juhl in 1953, the chair showcases his distinctive approach to furniture as functional sculpture, bringing together organic shapes and carefully considered craftsmanship in a timeless design.
Originally introduced as the NV 53 for the Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition, the chair was named after master joiner Niels Vodder, who helped bring Finn Juhl’s innovative designs to life. Its defining feature is the sculptural wooden frame, in which the rear legs flow upwards into beautifully shaped armrests that curve around the upholstered seat. This creates a striking contrast between the solid timber structure and the softer, almost floating appearance of the cushions.
Every detail of the 53 Lounge Chair reflects Finn Juhl’s interest in the relationship between form, material and comfort. The smooth curves of the frame highlight the natural grain of the wood, while the generously upholstered seat and back provide a welcoming place to relax. Its distinctive silhouette looks elegant from every angle, making it an ideal standalone piece for a living room, reading corner, private study or sophisticated hospitality interior.
The House of Finn Juhl 53 Lounge Chair is available in solid walnut with a range of premium upholstery options in fabric or leather. Cimmermann’s featured configuration includes a solid walnut frame upholstered in Kvadrat Tonus 4 fabric, offering a tactile finish that complements the warmth of the timber. Alternative upholstery choices are available to suit different interiors and personal preferences.

Finn Juhl (1912-1989) was the first Danish furniture designer to be recognized internationally. He studied architecture at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen with Danish architect Vilhelm Lauritzen, but as a furniture designer he was self-taught, a fact he always emphasized.
Juhl began designing furniture in the late 1930s, in the beginning mostly pieces intended for himself, but after setting up his own office in 1945 he soon became known for his unusual, expressive and sculptural pieces.
One of Finn Juhl's most well-known pieces is the Chieftains Chair. Designed in 1949, it is a fine example of Juhl's great idea of separating the sculpturally shaped seat and back from the wooden frame.
