USM Haller is a modular furniture system designed in Switzerland that has become a design classic since its introduction in 1965. Its patented construction uses chrome-plated steel tubes linked by spherical connectors and powder-coated panels to create storage, desks, shelving and more. The result is timeless, functional furniture that can be reconfigured, expanded or repurposed as needs change making it ideal for both residential and commercial spaces.A brief history
USM stands for Ulrich Schaerer Münsingen, after its founder Ulrich Schaerer and its origins in the Swiss town of Münsingen. Founded in 1885 as a hardware and lock business, USM transformed with the arrival of architect Fritz Haller in 1961, who was hired to design a new factory and office building. Inspired by Haller’s steel construction system, he and Paul Schaerer conceptualised what would become the USM Haller Collection, a range of modular furniture designed to adapt and evolve with changing cultural and functional demands.
Why people choose USM Haller:
People choose USM Haller for its rare combination of timeless design and long-term practicality.
The system’s clean, minimalist Swiss aesthetic gives it a low visual profile that works effortlessly in both contemporary and classic interiors, while its modular construction allows units to be rearranged, expanded or reduced as needs change over time.
Built from high-grade steel components with durable powder-coated surfaces, USM Haller is designed to last for decades. Its modularity also makes it a more sustainable choice, as individual parts can be reused, adapted or retrofitted rather than the entire piece being replaced.

Final Tips for Buyers
Think long-term: one of the biggest strengths of a modular system is that you don’t have to get it perfect first time it can grow with your space.
Visual balance matters: plan proportions carefully to avoid units feeling too heavy or sparse.
Ask about installation and wall anchoring if your configuration requires it.

USM FAQS
What is USM Haller?
USM Haller is a modular furniture system from Switzerland built around chrome steel tubes and panels that can be combined into storage units, desks, shelves and more. Its modularity means you can personalise it and reconfigure it as your needs change.
Will my USM unit be delivered fully assembled?
USM Haller furniture available to ‘add to basket’ on our website is delivered fully assembled. For bespoke larger configurations partial disassembly will be necessary for transport, final assembly on site will have to be paid for by a trained USM fitter. If you have a bespoke configuration please get in touch to obtain a quote for assembly. We always recommend using a specialist fitter as otherwise the warranty could be in question.
Why has my USM unit come with no keys?
Many USM Haller units with doors have what’s called a transport safety catch rather than a functional lock by default. This catch keeps doors closed during shipping but isn’t a true lock it doesn’t come with keys and isn’t designed for security. If your doors have this safety catch, you can usually open them the first time with a coin or screwdriver by turning the slot in the handle 90° until it’s horizontal this releases the transport catch. To have key-lockable doors, you need to select lock handles as an option at the time of ordering.
How long does delivery take?
Typical lead times in the UK for custom USM Haller furniture are 5 - 8 weeks from order to delivery, depending on your location, size and configuration.
Can I expand or reconfigure my USM unit myself?
Small adjustments and internal cosmetic changes can often be done yourself, but larger structural modifications are generally recommended to be done by trained specialists, since USM furniture is engineered with precision and improper assembly can risk damage or affect warranty.
Is there a warranty?
Original USM furniture includes a materials and workmanship warranty for 2 years.
What are the colour options?
USM comes in 15 colours.
We can order colour swatches that we can send to you just get in touch with us to arrange.
