Designed by celebrated artist and sculptor Harry Bertoia in 1952, the Knoll Bertoia Plastic Side Chair reflects the innovative spirit of one of modern design’s most influential figures.
In 2015, the design world celebrated the centenary of Bertoia’s birth, recognising a legacy that continues to shape contemporary furniture and interior design.
Combining the distinctive geometric steel wire frame of the Bertoia Collection with a practical plastic seat, this designer dining chair brings together sculptural form, material contrast and everyday functionality. Its open, architectural silhouette creates a sense of visual lightness, making it a versatile addition to contemporary dining rooms, kitchen spaces and design-led interiors.
Rooted in mid-century modern design, the Knoll Bertoia Plastic Side Chair complements minimalist, industrial and contemporary settings, working equally well around a dining table or as an individual statement piece. Celebrating Harry Bertoia’s enduring influence on modernist furniture, this distinctive Knoll side chair combines timeless design with everyday versatility.

Harry Bertoia was a complete and gifted artist. He started life as a metal worker who was ahead of his time and crossed boundaries daily. His famous designs for Knoll are truly unique and his original trade of metal worker can clearly be seen. Knoll historian Brian Lutz once said “Bertoia’s paintings were better than his sculptures. And his sculptures were better than his furniture. And his furniture was absolutely brilliant."
